FROM HARDWARE TO HARDPACK
In the 1940s, Tom Nichols Sr. ran a small East Dearborn hardware store stocked with everything from nails to fishing rods.
But in 1954, his son Tom strapped on skis for the first time—and something clicked. He convinced his dad to clear a corner of the shop took a leap with a $10,000 order of ski gear, and sold out in weeks.

LOVE AT FIRST LESSON
One winter day, Shirley walked into the shop to rent skis. Tom offered lessons. She said yes—to the lessons, and eventually to a lifetime together. The two built a marriage, a family, and a business rooted in their shared love for the slopes.

FROM A CORNER TO FOREVER HOME
By 1968, Nichols had outgrown its corner of the hardware store. The family moved into a dedicated space on Michigan Avenue.
Now, generations of skiers and snowboarders have walked through the doors. Parents brought their kids, those kids brought theirs, and the tradition kept growing.

THREE KIDS, COUNTLESS MEMORIES
Kristen, Karen, and Tom III grew up on the shop floor and on the slopes. From their parents, Tom and Shirley they learned a love of skiing and approach to treating everyone who walked into the shop like family.
Today, they carry forward their parents’ commitment to trusted advice, expert service, and a warm welcome—because they know the best gear is just the start of a great day.

70 YEARS AND STILL RIDING
Nichols is still here for your winter adventures. In 1993, we expanded to Waterford, taking over a retiring ski shop and bringing our trusted service to a new community.
Seven decades later, we’ve seen the sport evolve, but our belief hasn’t changed: Time on the slopes brings people together, and we’re here to make every run count.
